Jamie Kah lands Hong Kong major taking out Classic Mile on Voyage Bubble

Superstar Jamie Kah has landed her first Hong Kong major after taking out the Classic Mile with a daring front running ride at Sha Tin on Sunday night.

Kah, who had never raced at Sha Tin prior to Sunday’s Group 1 meeting, landed a double on the day, which was headlined by Voyage Bubble’s win in the four-year-old series opener.

While the Classic Mile is not a recognised Group 1, it is considered one of the most prestigious races in Hong Kong, as it is the opening leg of the four-year-old series, which leads to the Derby in March.

Mickael Barzalona was originally booked to ride the Deep Field gelding, but was unable to ride after incurring a suspension in Dubai a week earlier.

It left Kah to get the last-minute call up from trainer Ricky Yiu.

“I’m a bit speechless really,” Kah said. “It is a massive thrill, he’s such a tough horse and it is a long straight — I was waiting for something to come past me.

“I’m just speechless.”

Victory in the HK$12m feature ($2.2m AUD) marks Kah’s biggest win in the jurisdiction, where she led home an all-Aussie trifecta with Luke Currie (Tuchel) and Zac Purton (Packing Treadmill) filling the placings.

Hugh Bowman and James McDonald also won on the day, which saw Golden Sixty win the much hyped Group 1 Stewards’ Cup (1600m) fro Romantic Warrior and California Spangle.
